The cylinder head seals the top of each engine cylinder, forming the upper boundary of the combustion chamber. It houses the fuel injector, exhaust valve assembly (2-stroke engines), inlet and exhaust valves (4-stroke engines), indicator cock, safety valve, and extensive internal cooling water passages. Cylinder heads are subject to the highest combined thermal and mechanical stresses in the entire engine.

Seals the combustion chamber against peak firing pressures, houses valve gear and fuel injection equipment, routes pressurised cooling water around the combustion space, provides mounting for indicator and safety valves.
