The piston is the reciprocating component that receives combustion pressure and transmits it to the crankshaft via the piston rod and crosshead assembly (2-stroke) or connecting rod (4-stroke). In large 2-stroke engines, the piston is typically a composite assembly: a cast iron or steel skirt with a separately-attached alloy steel crown. The crown is exposed directly to combustion gases and peak temperatures exceeding 400°C, requiring internal oil or water cooling.
Function in the Engine
Transfers combustion gas pressure to the crankshaft mechanism through the piston rod or connecting rod, seals the combustion chamber in cooperation with the piston rings, provides the machined ring grooves that locate and constrain the piston rings.
