In 2-stroke crosshead engines, the connecting rod links the crosshead pin to the crankpin, transmitting combustion forces between these two bearing points. In 4-stroke trunk-piston engines, it connects the gudgeon pin directly to the crankpin. Connecting rods are highly-loaded forged alloy steel components engineered to withstand the combined compressive firing loads and tensile inertia loads of continuous marine operation.
Function in the Engine
Transmits combustion forces from crosshead or gudgeon pin to the crankpin, converts reciprocating motion to rotation in combination with the crankshaft, carries pressurised lubricating oil to the crankpin bearing through internal drilling.
