The anti-polishing ring is fitted at the top of the cylinder liner in the dead zone above the top piston ring travel. As the piston approaches top dead centre, this ring scrapes carbon and varnish deposits from the piston top land, preventing the build-up that causes polishing of the upper liner bore — a major source of accelerated wear and increased oil consumption in marine diesel engines.
