The exhaust valve cage is a self-contained assembly in 2-stroke marine diesel engines that houses the exhaust valve spindle, seat, spring, and actuation mechanism. Mounted at the centre of the cylinder head combustion face, it opens to exhaust combustion gases at the end of the power stroke and must withstand continuous exposure to exhaust gas temperatures exceeding 400°C.
Function in the Engine
Houses and guides the exhaust valve spindle, provides the hydraulically-actuated opening mechanism and spring-loaded closing force, routes cooling water around the highly-loaded seat area, and is designed for rapid exchange during port calls to minimise vessel downtime.
